BACKGROUND

In the 28 years of my involvement in the human growth movement, I have been strongly influenced by the following:

  • The integral framework (commonly known as AQAL) propounded by philosopher Ken Wilber. AQAL provides the most comprehensive integration of every field of human knowledge currently in existence. I orientate my professional and personal life through the AQAL framework.Wilber’s writings have guided me since 1983. My conceptual grasp of how the world works is clear and grounded as a result.

  • The nursing philosophy of Florence Nightingale who maintained that healing is the art of creating those conditions conducive for the individual’s self-regenerative powers to operate to maximum effect. Regarding psychological healing; nobody can do it for you but somebody being there with you and for you can take you a long way.

  • The practice of yoga. In the last three decades, I have practised most modern ‘brands’ (Iyengar, Ashtanga etc) as well as the more traditional, ‘internal’ yogas. Through living a yogic lifestyle, I feel energised, balanced, well-disposed towards others and able to maintain strong powers of focus.

  • The guiding therapeutic frameworks of Transactional Analysis (TA) and NonViolent Communication (NVC). They have taught me how to keep relationships with others healthy and respectful.

  • The practice of Mahamudra, a Tibetan Buddhist meditation path. I have learned an enormous amount about how the mind actually works through Mahamudra practices.

  • The many lessons taught by my family members on a daily basis.

I have enjoyed successful careers in Systems Engineering and Mental Health Nursing prior to working as a private sector Psychotherapist. I have also travelled, lived on a commune and written yoga articles for various journals.
